Castellated Holes – Edge plating PCBs

The word castellation originates from castles with battlements. A grooved structure. In the PCBs, castellated holes describes when copper or gold plating appears on the edges of a PCB.

Castellation is typically in selected areas, and not continuous around the circumference of the board, as tabs are required to hold pcb panels during processing in chemical baths, to accomplish copper deposition.

Castellated Holes

The process is called castellation and is normally confined to parts of holes as illustrated in the 3D image below. By using castellated holes it becomes easy to make components for other pcbs, with pcbs.  We have supplied very small pcbs,  sometimes punched such pcbs smaller than  5×5 mm in 0.4 mm thick FR4 material, for example.
